Alaskan Malamutes

ALASKAN MALAMUTE

The Alaskan Malamute, is a friendly and affectionate freighting dog named after the native Inuit tribe called Mahlemuts who settled along the shores of Kotzebue Sound in the upper western regions of Alaska….

The Alaskan Malamute

It is said that the traditional Mahlemut people took better care of their dogs than was usual in the Arctic… and it is thought that this special care likely accounts for the breeds good nature. Averaging 75-85lbs, a full grown Malamute looks like a force to reckoned with, and he is! They are a northern breed which required a lot of exercise, a fair bit of grooming (especially during the seasonal shedding of their tremendous undercoat) and a firm hand when training. They excel as companions, freighting sled dogs, show dogs or weight pull competitors.

With their superficial resemblance to wolves, many would-be buyers assume they are guard dogs. They are not. Their appearance may well have a deterrent effect but their temperament towards people, including complete strangers, is generally friendly in the extreme which coupled with the fact that they rarely bark, means that if a guard-dog is what you’re looking for, you should try another breed.

Despite their sweet nature towards people, their beauty and cheerful spirit, Malamutes are not an easy breed to raise or train, and are not generally recommended for those without previous large-breed experience. The breed can be stubborn, mischievous and sometimes dog-aggressive, however, in the right hands they make majestic and loyal companions and engaging family pets.
